2013 PACE President calls for compliance with European standards in the Republic of Moldova
Strasbourg, May 6th, 2013
Strasbourg, 06.05.2013 - Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), has voiced concern about the current situation in the Republic of Moldova, where a political struggle seems to be in danger of jeopardising the Moldovan people's aspirations on the road to European integration. "Some recent votes in the country's Parliament concerning issues as vital to the operation of democracy as compliance with the constitution, the independence of the judiciary and the electoral system have been conducted in great haste, without any efforts to seek broad consensus within the Parliament", PACE President said. "I urge all political forces in the country to put their partisan and personal interests to one side and work together for the European future of the country and its citizens", he added, while underlining that the PACE "is willing to facilitate dialogue between the various political parties, if they so wish".
