Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova
On 8 and 9 September 2014, Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova is hosting the International Conference on "The role of constitutional justice in protecting the values of the rule of law", an event dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Constitution and for underlining the constitutional review of laws in Republic of Moldova.
Participants at the Conference are the delegates of the constitutional courts or of the supreme courts of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Republic of Korea, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovenia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, the President of the Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union and special guests from universities and from foundations that run cooperation programs in the field of constitutional justice.
Furthermore, at the event are attending political, legal and academic personalities, whose presentations are aiming the activity of the constitutional courts in a time of profound changes in society as a whole, also underling the development, over more than two decades of existence, of the role of constitutional courts in protecting and maintaining the rule of law.
The celebration begins with a tribute to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, in a solemn session, by honouring the State Flag of Moldova and the National Anthem, played by the Presidential Orchestra, in the presence of the Honour Guard of the Ministry of Defence.
At the solemn session, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Nicolae Timofti, the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Igor Corman, the Prime Minister, Mr. Iurie Leancă, the President of the Venice Commission, Mr. Gianni Buquicchio and the President of the Constitutional Court, Mr. Alexandru Tănase, will address to participants.
The conference includes four sessions, chaired by Mr. Augustin Zegrean, President of the Constitutional Court of Romania, Mr. Aldis Laviņš, President of the Constitutional Court of Latvia, Mr. Dainius Zalimas, President of the Constitutional Court of Lithuania and Mr. George Papuashvili, President of the Constitutional Court of Georgia, member of the Venice Commission and President of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts.
At the conference will be discussed issues regarding aspects of recent case laws of the authorities of constitutional jurisdiction, as well as the role of constitutional jurisdiction in protecting fundamental human rights and promoting the spirit of constitutionalism, constitutional loyalty and constitutional identity, confirming the consistency and solidity of the relationships between constitutional courts.
The Conference dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Constitution is organized by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova in cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, with the support of the Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), of the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation (IRZ) and of the Coordination Office for Technical Cooperation of the Austrian Embassy in Chisinau.
The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova was adopted on 29 July 1994 and entered into force on 27 August of the same year.
